Septic tanks are a requirment for American homes that are not connected to a municipal sewer plant. These tanks are usually situated underground in the front or back yard, and serve a very important purpose: containing the wastes that are carried out of your home.  The system requires a septic tank along with a soil absorption system (drain field) that are both installed underground.
